Surviving “Ironman” Sunday

September 10, 2007

Downtown Madison from OlinTurville ParkIn the past, I’ve dreaded the Sunday in September when the Ironman Wisconsin competition is held in Madison.  I’ve dreaded it because this is such a massive event that it truly ties up not only all the streets in downtown Madison but everything going into the southern and western parts of Dane County.

I’m either getting used to the inconvenience of this event or the organizer’s did a great job trying to mitigate this problem in how the course was laid out yesterday.  I drove back in to town from a great weekend at Northern Bay on Castle Rock Lake and found it pretty easy to manuever around the streets that were blocked off.  This was later in the day but there were still bike riders coming up John Nolen Drive and definitely runners coming back in to the isthmus.

My hat is off to those who made this not only a great event for Central Madison but also those of us who use to feel this event as a huge inconvenience to everyone in the central city to the western parts of Dane County.
