Rock Lake…So Near and Yet Centuries Away

December 22, 2008

Every once in a while I hear of something a little “different” than the usual.  It’s kind of a welcomed relief from the economy, the real estate market, living in central Madison, etc…

Today, my partner, Devery is visiting his family in Mobile, Alabama.  He dropped me an e-mail this afternoon asking if I knew anything about the “Pyramids” of Rock Lake located about 15 miles east of Madison in Lake Mills, WI.  Having lived my entire life (other than 6 years in Chicago) in the Madison area, I was surprised I’d never heard of this.  I grew up a HUGE fan of TV shows like Star Trek, In Search of… and many other shows that dealt with either the paranormal, the supernatural and unexplainable structures such as the Moai  of Easter Island.

So hearing of ancient pyramids under the surface of nearby Rock Lake has really intrigued me.

Here’s some of what I’ve found online regarding the pyramids:

The Pyramids of Wisconsin

Above Top Secret: Rock Lake Wisconsin

As executive director of the Lake Mills Main Street Program I’m hoping to spred the word about our “pyramids.” That is in quotes because they are not really pyramids. They are man-made mounds, different shapes and sizes, and there are other formations too. Unfortunately we can’t get anyone with “professional” status interested. But we are working on it – if these things were above ground we’d have people swarming! Help spread the word and visit us, we are a great little town, very Norman Rockwell and our lake is a true treasure – pyramids or not! On February 7th we will be having our Knickerbocker Ice Fest with golfing on the frozen Rock Lake, a fisheree, ice carving, a chili cook-off, sno ball eating contest, IdiderDAD race, frozen fish toss and lots of retail promotions and specials. COme and join us – you’ll have a great time.
